What to watch out for when buying Easter gifts online February 21 2015

Online shopping has become a widely accepted practice here in South Africa, with many people opting to avoid the chaos of local malls and do their Easter shopping online instead. It’s become all too easy for fraudsters to launch a website and con people out of their hard-earned-cash, which is why you should do your research before buying anything online. Here are some tips to keep in mind when buying your Easter gifts online this year:

Do they offer a secure payment facility?

Some people are still wary about entering their credit card details online. A reputable online store should give you a number of options, including EFT, cash deposits, digital currencies (such as Bitcoin) as well as VISA and Mastercard payments.

Does the shopping cart facility work?

A supplier who is serious about online selling will have a website where you can add products to your cart and make a payment. If you get bogged down with back-and-forth e-mails about products that are out of stock, take your business elsewhere.

How quick do they respond to queries?

If you’ve got a query about your purchase, the online store’s shipping process or the payment process, the online store should be easy to contact and quick to respond to your queries.

Do they have a return policy?

Online shopping can come with risks (a clothing item not fitting properly, the product not working or the wrong one being shipped to you accidentally). Find out if they have a return policy so that you are able to return a product and get a refund if you aren’t satisfied.

Check the privacy policy

The last thing you need is for your personal details such as your e-mail address ending up in a spam database. Make sure the online store has a privacy policy to ensure your details won’t be shared with any other websites or companies.

How to make money selling watches February 04 2015

Watches, especially designer watches, are a huge industry in South Africa. Just a quick browse through any shopping centre or online shopping mall will show you how competitive this industry is. With new, feature-filled watches launching every day and a rising price tag on classic, collector’s items, it comes as no surprise that many entrepreneurs are trying to claim their piece of this industry pie.

So, what does it take to start making money from buying watches? Firstly, you need to find a supplier. As we mentioned in a previous post (where-to-find-men-s-watches-in-south-africa), the chances of an individual buyer being able to buy bulk designer watches directly from a watch manufacturer is nil. Manufacturers already have selling agreements with retail chains and aren’t really open to selling directly to small suppliers.

Another option is buying watches from China. This, however, comes with a number of challenges and risks. Firstly, it’s not always easy to find a reliable supplier in China. Navigating Chinese supplier websites can be difficult and they don’t always accept our payment methods. Secondly, you will need to buy in bulk, so not only do you need a lot of cash on hand but you need to make sure you’re going to be able to sell all your watches in order to make money. Thirdly, your shipment could get searched and you will probably end up paying import taxes on your products.

Another viable solution is buying high quality men’s watches at a discount price from ZARmall. All of our products are available at our offices and we can courier them anywhere in South Africa. The best part of buying your watches from us is that you can choose to buy a single watch or in bulk (we can even post the watch directly to your buyer for you, giving you a risk-free way to make money).

We’re selling mens watches on Takealot! February 02 2015

ZARmall is always looking for new online shopping opportunities and we recently opened a seller page on Takealot.co.za. We’ve been selling mens watches online for 5 years, but partnering with takealot.co.za is a new development that we hope will reach more customers in the long run.

One of the reasons we decided to start using this online shopping platform is the fact that they’re doing a lot in the online retail space in South Africa. Takealot has been around since 2011 and it’s one of the fastest growing ecommerce retailers in Africa. For example, the company acquired a 60% stake in a business-to-consumer delivery company in January 2013. In October 2014, they merged with Kalahari.net.

Online shopping is becoming really big in South Africa, but it’s been a long haul. Many online sellers can’t compete with brick and mortar shops (or with foreign companies like Amazon and Alibaba). What we like about Takealot is the fact that they’re trying new things and making it easy for people to buy from them.

So without further ado, please check out our new seller’s page on Takealot. Happy shopping!

Where to find men’s watches in South Africa December 08 2014

So you’ve decided to buy a special someone a men’s watch as a gift. Now you’ve got to set out to find the perfect watch. Here’s quick rundown of where you can go to find the perfect men’s watch:

  • Jewellery stores

Jewellery stores will have a range of watches for men. The upside of buying a watch from a jewellery stores is that you’re usually guaranteed that it’s not a knock-off (if it’s a reputable jewellery store chain, they won’t be selling counterfeit watches). The downside is usually the price. The fact that the store needs to pay rent in a mall, employ staff etc. means that the price will be more than you would pay than if you were buying directly from the supplier, which leads us to the next place you can buy a men’s watch…

  • Directly from a supplier

If you’ve got a particular designer men’s watch in mind, you may have thought of contacting the manufacturer directly. This usually isn’t an option for the general public seeing as watch manufacturers have contracts with clothing stores and jewellers to sell their products for them. While retail chains are able to get designer men’s watches at a discounted rate, the chance of an individual buying a single watch from a manufacturer is usually zero.

  • Pawn stores

If you’re looking for a good deal, a pawn shop is an option. Keep in mind that many men (unless they collect watches) wouldn’t be too happy about receiving a second hand watch as a gift.

  • Shop online

The benefit of buying a man watch online is the fact that you’ll pay less for a high quality product. At ZARmall, we offer a wide range of designer men’s watches at great prices. Browse our range of men’s watches now.

Online shopping DO’s and DON’T’S December 07 2014

If you’re happy to pay your bills and make payments online but a bit fearful of buying Christmas presents or gifts online – fear it no longer. Here is a list of do’s and don’ts for online shopping success:

DO: Understand the return policy

If you’re buying from a bulk supplier in China, you probably won’t have the option of returning an item if it’s not what you had in mind. Local online stores, however, are often much more lenient when it comes to returning goods. Make sure you keep your proof of payment and find out how long you have to return an item if you are unhappy with your purchase after it arrives.

DON’T: Assume the shipping will be free

Make sure you understand the shipping policy (will they be using the local postal service or a courier company?). Knowing what the cost of shipping will be gives you the information you need to make an educated decision about your purchase. Don’t go through the whole process of adding items to your shopping cart just to find out that the added shipping costs leads to your product being twice the amount.

DO: Ask if you can ship multiple items together

If you’re buying more than one item, make sure the supplier can box them all together and ship it in one go (as opposed to shipping each item individually).

DON’T: Forget to ask for a tracking number

If you’ve ordered and paid for your item, the supplier should give you a tracking number within a few days so that you can track the delivery of your purchases.

Why buy a men’s watch for your partner? December 07 2014

Finding the perfect present for your husband (or any other man in your life) can be an ongoing battle. Men don’t appreciate clothes and sentimental items like women do. To add to the frustration, men typically go out and simply buy the things they need. Whether it’s a drill, a new sound system or running shoes, they generally don’t let months go buy if they feel they need something. So what’s left to buy?
A watch is a great gift for a man for a number of reasons, including the following:

Watches are timeless

Watches aren’t something that go out of fashion each season so it doesn’t need to be replaced every few months. A watch can last for years, making it a timeless gift for your loved one.

It shows thought and consideration

If your guy is a preppy, sophisticate office worker, you can buy a designer men’s watch that shows class and style. If he’s the outdoorsy, sporty type, you can buy a waterproof sport watch that won’t stop working the minute it hits the water.

It’s affordable

While designer watches can be pricey, there are many affordable versions available. If you’re prepared to spend some time hunting down the perfect watch, you’ll be able to find what you’re looking for at a reasonable price.

You can buy it online

Many online stores, such as ZARmall, sell high quality men’s watches at a fraction of the price that you would pay at your local jewellery store. Forget about spending a day in a busy shopping centre this season and simply find the perfect watch for your man and we’ll deliver it to you.

3 reasons to do your Christmas shopping online this year December 03 2014

‘Tis the season to be jolly, but few things are jolly about the inevitable doom that falls upon us in December – Christmas shopping. Here are three reasons why you should consider doing all of your Christmas shopping online this year:

Avoid the hassle
If you’ve got a specific gift in mind, such as a watch for your partner, an xBox or a DVD, you’ve got no way of knowing if you’re even going to find the item you have in mind at your nearest mall. To add to the frustration, you’re going to spend time in traffic, stand in queues and inevitably spend the better part of your day in the mall. Avoid all the hassle by browsing online stores that offer a secure payment facility and can send you exactly what you need in time for Christmas.

Stick to budget
It’s easy to spend more than what you were initially planning to spend when you go to a mall. Suddenly new items catch your eye or a specific product in the window reminds you of a friend or acquaintance that you weren’t even going to buy gifts for, and you end up swiping your credit card and going overboard. It’s better to draw up a to-do list of everything you need to buy and simply buy it online.

You can get the gift delivered
The best part of shopping online is the fact that you can ask the supplier to post the item to the person that should receive the gift (if you’re not able to see your friend or family member over the festive period, this is a great way to deliver gifts).
What are you waiting for? Visit ZARmall and start buying your Christmas gifts online now.

Bitcoin in South Africa December 01 2014

Bitcoin in South Africa

The Rand has continued to drop and with a weak global resource market, an increasing number of people are turning to digital currencies. Bitcoin, a relatively new online payment system (ie digital money) that is powered by its users with no central authority or middleman, is quickly becoming the cash for the internet. The first proof of concept for Bitcoin was published in 2009 and global recognition has led to a more widespread acceptance of this digital currency in South Africa.

Gareth Grobler, manager of ice3x.com (a local Bitcoin exchange), told News24 that all types of people are signing up for Bitcoin South Africa. “From teenagers to people in their eighties: people from different backgrounds. They’ve heard of Bitcoin, they want to learn more and they just want to get rid of their Rand,” Grobler told News24.

Can you shop online with Bitcoin in South Africa?

If you’re one of the many South Africans that like to shop online, there’s a good chance that you can use Bitcoin to make payments. If the website uses Payfast.co.za, for example, then you can pay with Bitcoin. You can also pay someone for products or services in Bitcoin if they have a Bitcoin wallet. Other South African companies that are accepting Bitcoin include South Africa Travel Online for their popular Durban to Cape Town cruise, a Salon Supply Store, printing solutions store Silver Banana and ZARmall, which sells everything from watches to camera accessories.

If you don’t have a Bitcoin wallet yet, you can register with one of our two local bitcoin exchanges www.bitx.co.za or www.ice3x.com to get a Bitcoin wallet.
